MANILA, Philippines - De La Salle University (DLSU) drew first blood over bitter rival Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) this year as the Junior Archers defeated the reigning 3-time champion Blue Eaglets, 78-75, in overtime on Tuesday's UAAP juniors basketball.

Gabby Reyes scored 21 points and Isaac Lim added 16 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists to lift La Salle-Zobel at AdMU's home court in Katipunan.

Reyes sank two pressure packed charities for a 76-73 advantage, before the Junior Archers forced the Blue Eaglets to a 5-second inbound violation in the next play just 30 seconds remaining.

Kristiane Velhagen's free throw gave La Salle Zobel more breathing room in overtime, but Ateneo made it 75-77 on Gab Capacio’s putback.

Axel Torres split his charities to make it 78-75 with 18.6 seconds remaining. The Junior Archers then tightened its defense in the final seconds, forcing Blue Eaglets’ Gerald Austria’s desperation triple to miss its mark.

It was Ateneo's Thomas Ramos who sank two free throws to send the game into overtime, 67-67.

MANILA—Nigerian rookie Alinko Mbah will suit up for the University of the Philippines after completing the documents needed for his stint in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament this season.

Mbah, a 6-foot-9 center, is one of the eight foreigners listed in the league’s official lineup, while several foreigners with Filipino roots, including five rookies, are also playing this year.

“[Mbah] will play, we already have his red-ribbon authenticated documents,” UP coach Ricky Dandan said Monday.

Among the requirements for foreign players are red-ribbon certifications from the Philippine consulate of their country of origin.

Only the eligibility clearance of Mbah and Cameroonian Karim Abdul of the University of Santo Tomas had remained pending due to incomplete documents. The deadline of submission is at the end of the first round of eliminations.

“We’ll meet the deadline,” said UST coach Pido Jarencio.

Season 74 kicked off over the weekend with three-time champion Ateneo turning back Adamson, 55-51, and last year’s runner-up Far Eastern University downing La Salle, 74-65.

Mbah will be a vital cog when the Maroons—who had a winless run last season—start their bid against the University of the East at 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Even the incessant downpour couldn’t stop the 74th season of the UAAP from officially kicking off over the weekend. This year’s theme “All Out, All Heart.” was in full display last Saturday as athletes, school officials, and students attended the opening rites despite the heavy rains. Yesterday, four teams—Far Eastern University (FEU), De La Salle University, Ateneo De Manila University, and Adamson University—played in the first game day of the season, showing off their re-tooled rosters and well, new uniforms. Just like last year, every week, we’ll feature interesting numbers that in one way or another, contributed to a game or event. As they say, numbers tell stories.

3,700
The estimated number of athletes who paraded in the UAAP opening ceremonies last Saturday at the Marikina Sports Complex. The players of the eight competing schools in 14 different sports bucked the non-stop rain as they participated in the Olympic-themed ceremony hosted by Ateneo. The University of Santo Tomas had the biggest contingent with 627 from the Juniors and Seniors, while National University had the least with 260.

29
The number of consecutive games Ateneo has now won over Adamson following its 55 – 51 triumph last Sunday. The Blue Eagles last lost to the Soaring Falcons, 52 – 54, on September 18, 1997 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Eaglets open title defense
Manila, Philippines – Reigning three-peat champion Ateneo opens its title defense tomorrow as it battles archrival De La Salle Zobel in the main game of a highly anticipated quadruple-header to kick off the 74th UAAP juniors basketball wars at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The Eaglets try to get their four-peat aspirations rolling when they meet the dangerous Junior Archers at 3 p.m., shortly after the 1 p.m. encounter between FEU-FERN and UE.

Season 73 runners-up UST collides with last year’s surprise third-placers NU at 11 a.m. while UPIS and Adamson meet in the 9 a.m. curtain-raiser.

With last season’s core already gone, Ateneo is expected to squeeze out more from its holdovers despite the influx of a new breed of talents in the Eaglets’ nest.

Out to prove their worth anew are returnees Lambert Tenorio, Kiefer Lim, Janus Suarez, Volek Vitangcol, Gerard Austria, Mark Gamboa, and Mio Puno, whom Ateneo coach Jamike Jarin hopes to fill the void left by RP Youth Team members Kiefer Ravena, Von Pessumal and Paolo Romero, and veterans Chuckie Dumrique and Jay Javelosa.
